How to Replace the Alternator on a 1999 Ford Escort

    • 1). Remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Use a wrench or socket and ratchet to remove the retaining bolt. Then pull the connector loose for the terminal.

    • 2). Locate the multi-plug on the back of the alternator. Unplug the connector by releasing the locking clips and pulling the plug loose. Lay the plug aside for now.

    • 3). Locate the adjusting bolt on at the top of the alternator. Remove the adjusting bolt with a socket and ratchet. Push the alternator toward the engine and remove the belt from the pulley.

    • 4). Locate the two lower mounting bolts. They both have a nut on the backside of the bolt. Remove both bolts with a socket and ratchet while holding the nut with a wrench to keep it from spinning.

    • 5). Lift the alternator out of the engine compartment and replace it with the new unit. Install the lower mounting bolts followed by the nuts and hand tighten them for now.

    • 6). Place the belt over the pulley and pull the alternator out to tighten the belt. Install the adjusting bolt in the upper bracket and tighten it with a socket and ratchet. Tighten the lower mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet.

    • 7). Connect the multi-plug to the back of the new alternator, pushing it in until the locking clips snap in place. Replace the negative battery cable on the battery and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench.
