How to Replace the Ignition Switch on a 97 Taurus
- 1). Open the driver’s door and pull the hood release lever. Raise the hood on your Taurus and locate the car battery. Identify which of the two cables connected to the battery is the negative. You should see a minus sign right next to the post that the cable is connected to.
- 2). Loosen and remove the negative cable with a socket wrench. While you’re still holding the cable, wrap black electrical tape around the terminal at the end of it. There should not be any metal showing after you finish wrapping the terminal. Position the cable along the side of the battery away from its post completely.
- 3). Kneel down so that you can see underneath the steering column. Remove the four screws holding the steering column’s trim in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Place the screws in your pocket and set the piece of trim on the passenger seat.
- 4). Insert the ignition key into the ignition and turn it to the “RUN” position.
- 5). Identify the ignition switch. With the lower portion of the steering column trim removed, the switch should be visible. Look directly below the key lock cylinder and see the ignition switch attached to it.
- 6). Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch. Remove the two screws holding the switch in place, and pull the ignition switch downward away from the key lock cylinder.
- 7). Install the new ignition switch on your 97 Taurus by reversing all of the removal steps precisely.
