    • 1). Wait at least 24 hours after plugging in the refrigerator before attempting to dispense ice from the ice maker, as the ice maker in a previously room-temperature refrigerator requires this much time to produce a significant amount of ice to dispense. The refrigerator cannot dispense ice soon after you plug it in because it has not yet reached a cool enough temperature.

    • 2). Move the switch on the ice maker to the "On" (I) position. The switch is found on the right side of the ice maker. The ice maker will not operate if it is in the "Off" (O) position.

    • 3). Move the refrigerator away from the wall so you can inspect the water line connection. The water line is inserted into the bottom of the back of a Kenmore refrigerator. A puddle of water near this connection is a good indicator that the connection is not tight, which decreases water pressure and ice production. Twist the nut clockwise around the connection until it is tight.

    • 4). Level the ice cubes in the ice bucket by hand or lightly shake the bucket to move any ice that is stuck at the top of the ice maker to fall a bit farther below. Ice will push the automatic lever arm up in the ice maker if it reaches a certain level. Dispensing ice will also free up more space in the bucket so that more ice can be produced.

    • 5). Wrap up the food tightly in the freezer if the ice has a foul smell or taste. If the ice has been in one place for a long period of time, it can begin to take on the taste and smell of food items surrounding it. It's recommended to throw away smelly ice and let the ice maker produce a fresh batch.

    • 6). Use a plastic utensil or your hand to clear out any ice that may be stick in the dispenser chute. This frees the chute space so that ice can freely flow.
