Decorative Containers

• Transforming these ordinary cans into something decorative and useful can be a very enjoyable craft. Start with an even coat of spray paint and embellish by attaching felt or craft foam shapes to create a design or a simple scene. Decoupage the can by painting it with a coat of primer and attaching pictures to the side of the can with a product called Mod Podge. • Create personalized gifts by recycling formula cans. Fill a can with spa products for a good friend in need of a relaxing break or art supplies for a budding artist. A get-well kit is a perfect gift for an ailing loved one. Fill the can with comfort items such as small books, soup mixes, gourmet cocoa or tea and a decorative mug. Pack in garden tools, gloves, flower seeds and gardening books for the plant lover or cookbooks, oven mitts and cooking tools for the chef. Decorate these cans with fabric, paint or contact paper and attach a personalized label.
  
  

Toys

• Formula cans can also be converted into creative toys. Let a little drummer create her own percussion instrument using an empty formula can. Have the child draw a picture on a piece of construction paper and attach the drawing around the can with Mod Podge. Supply wooden spoons for drumsticks and get ready for a musical serenade!
  
  Formula can stilts offer another opportunity for homemade fun. For each stilt, just drill two holes on either side of the can near the top. String a loop of sturdy rope through the holes and tie securely. The child can place one foot on top of each can and grab the ropes as he walks.

• Just because a can is being recycled for a practical purpose does not mean that it does not need a little face lift. Formula cans are a perfect size to use as a storage containers for plastic store bags. Attach fabric that complements the decor of the kitchen or utility room where the can will be kept and cut a hole in the lid of the can to provide easy access to the bags. Need a place to store CDs? Looking for a stackable container to store different craft supplies? Attach craft foam sheets to the side of the can with hot glue and add adhesive-backed foam letters to label the can appropriately.
  
  

Party Centerpieces

• Formula cans can also be used for inexpensive party centerpieces. Cover the can in wrapping paper that is appropriate to the occasion and add floral arrangements or a balloon bouquet. Or make a festive candy bouquet by filling the can with overflowing tissue paper or cellophane. Attach miniature candies to painted dowel rods and arrange these among the tissue paper or cellophane for a tasty and sweet bouquet.
