April is not only the beginning of spring, but also a month full of engaging and entertaining holidays. By providing students with activities related to April's fascinating holidays, teachers can educate their students on these festive occasions and create relevance in their lessons. As students take part in these lessons they increase their academic abilities and enjoy the April holidays. - Celebrate Easter and study math simultaneously with this hands-on activity. To prepare for this activity, purchase plastic Easter eggs and three different-colored Easter baskets. Label one basket "Multiples of 2", another "Multiples of 3" and the third "Multiples of 5". Using a permanent marker, label your eggs with numbers that fit into one of these categories. Hide your numbered eggs around the room before your students arrive in class.
When class begins, set your three labeled baskets in the front of the room. Explain to students that the Easter bunny visited early and hid eggs around the room and that they must find them and sort them. Tell students that, as they find eggs in the room, they must put them into one of the baskets based upon the number written on the egg. Tell students that some of the numbers could fit in to more than one category, such as six which could go in the multiples of 2 or multiples of 3 basket. Tell students that, when that happens they can put the egg in either basket. Give the students five minutes to find and correctly sort the eggs. Reward them if they accomplish the task in the allotted amount of time. - Celebrate Earth Day by creating posters to promote eco-friendly behavior. In the days leading up to Earth Day, discuss the potential dangers to the environment and the things that students can do to help keep the environment healthy. On Earth Day, give your students poster paper and art supplies and ask them to create posters that share the information that they have learned and encourage others to be friendly to Mother Earth.
- While your students are likely unaware of this fact, April 4th is Tell a Lie Day. Allow your students to celebrate this holiday by devising a huge and impressive fib to surprise and delight their peers. As class begins on April 4th, explain to your students that it is Tell a Lie Day. Ask each student to get out paper and write a story about their trip to school that morning. Ask students to insert several large lies into their tales to celebrate the day. For example, a student could say that he was late to school because a hippopotamus was in his swimming pool and he had to help his parents get the creature out. Allow students to read their lie-ridden tales. Ask the class to vote on which take is the best. Reward this student with a special "Best Fib-Teller" prize to celebrate his success.
