Troubleshooting a Tempstar Heater

Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Locate the LED display screen on the front of your Tempstar furnace unit. If your furnace isn't functioning properly, an error code is displayed on this screen.
2

Compare the error code to the key in your instruction manual. This should tell you exactly where the problem lies. If you can't decipher the error codes, or you have an older furnace without an LED screen, proceed to the next step.
3

Turn off the power to the furnace via the main "Power" switch connected to the unit.
4

Slide the bottom compartment of the furnace out to access to the air filter. Slide it out and inspect it. Most problems with home furnace systems are due to a dirty air filter. If your air filter is caked with dust and dirt you need to replace it.
5

Remove all screws on the top access panel of the furnace and remove the panel.
6

Check to make sure the pilot light is lit. If it isn't, you need to have a technician relight the pilot.
7

Check the metal rod next to the pilot. This is the sensor rod. If it is too dirty it can't detect a pilot flame and, in turn, doesn't open the gas valves so the burners can ignite. Clean the rod with steel wool.
8

Check the igniter. This is the fork-shaped metal component connected to a wiring harness that ignites the burners. If the metal, or wiring, is damaged, a professional needs to replace the igniter. If the problem lies with the gas supply, call a professional to inspect the gas lines.
