    The Bald Fade

    • The bald fade is arguably the most well-known layered hair style for black men. The hair around the bottom and sides of the head is cut almost to the point of baldness, with more hair around the upper sides and back of the head. The hair on top of the head is longer.

    Spiked Bald Fade

    • A bald fade with a spiked top features the traditional bald fade styling with much longer hair on the top. With a spiked top the hair can be any length. This is considered an aggressive, attention-getting style, as the hair around the sides is cut extremely close, while the hair on top could be an inch longer or more.

    Medium Bald Fade

    • The medium bald fade is similar to the bald fade. The hair is longer overall, but is still cut at different lengths for the layered effect. Black celebrities such as Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy have sported medium bald fades according to the website Cool Men's Hair.

    Short Dreadlocks

    • Short dreadlocks can also be styled for a layered effect. Dreads are created by allowing the hair to grow long, and then twisting the hair into dreadlocks that look similar to ponytails. The dreads can be cut to different lengths, creating a layered effect. It can take months for black men to grow enough hair to support dreadlocks.

    Well-Coiffed Afro

    • The Afro, which gained popularity in the 1960s, can also be used to create a layered effect. In 2010, the Afro had evolved into a more elegant haircut, with some men, such as rocker Lenny Kravitz, adding twists and curls to the hairstyle, according to the website Ask Men. The length of the twists and curls can be adjusted to create a layered look.
