How to Avoid Getting Hit by Lightning

    • 1). Go into a house. Your best defense against lighting is to remove yourself from the outside as soon as the clouds turn grey or you see the sky light up with electrical activity. Going indoors is your best bet to stay free of the zap.

    • 2). Keep clear of windows while inside. It is not common, but lighting can travel through substances like glass and still harm humans. It is best not to chance this and steer clear of windows. Also avoid touching or sitting on anything metal. If lighting strikes the building you are in, it is possible for the current to travel to metal objects.

    • 3). Get inside you car if there is no permanent shelter available. Your car is an adequate choice to avoid lighting as your rubber tires act as a grounding element that will not let electricity strike you. Still, it is a good idea to avoid touching anything metal.

    • 4). Walk away from trees or other tall areas of cover. More than any other structure trees attract lightning's wrath. While you may be out of the rain, lightning can still find you. Never take shelter here; even for a brief moment.

    • 5). Stay out of open fields and empty spaces like parking lots. If there is nothing else around like trees and poles, lighting will be attracted to the human body in the right conditions. Avoid this by seeking shelter.
