Making Rectangles on Grid Paper

    Mathematics

    • Mathematics, and more specifically geometry, involves the use of grid paper to draw rectangles and other shapes in order to diagram a specific image's dimensions. These diagrams are then used to calculate the surface area of a rectangle. It is also used to diagram 3-dimensional objects like rectangles. Those can then be used to calculate volume and surface area.

    Sewing Patterns

    • Making sewing patterns is easier with grid paper because you can use the pre-printed lines as guides to cut out your rectangular, or square patterns. These patterns can be used for quilts, appliques or crafts. You can also use the grid paper to cut out patterns for clothing, and once you cut out the patterns you can use the grids as guides to fold the patterns inward, thus resizing the patterns for different sized clothing.

    Engineering

    • Engineering often involves drawing rectangles on grid paper. These rectangles can represent many things in the scale drawings the engineer is drawing. They can be sewer lines, culverts, homes or lot lines in a planned community. Engineers have to create these drawings as rough plans before drawing official blueprints for construction projects like the construction of buildings or sewers. They need this base to build on their work.

    Architectural Design

    • Rectangles are drawn on grid paper frequently in the architectural design industry. Architectural design is the design of buildings and structures from residential to commercial. So the grid paper allows architects to draw out a sketch of what they want to create using geometric patterns linked together. It is their scratch paper where they can work out their ideas before transferring the final idea to scaled blueprints.
