How to Make a Six Foot Tall Bookcase
- 1). Measure and mark two wood planks for the sides of the bookcase, each to six feet. Place a set square across the side of each plank at the mark, running a pencil along the side of the set square to create a straight perpendicular line on both planks. Use a circular saw or handsaw to saw through each plank at the lines. Use fine sandpaper to remove splinters from the cuts.
- 2). Place the two 6-foot planks horizontally on the ground, back to back. From one end, measure on the side edges of the planks the distance between each shelf, marking each distance with a set square. Turn the planks over so the other side edges are together and facing up. Measure these side edges with the same distances between each shelf. Rest each shelf on one side, and use the set square and pencil to run a straight line between each set of side marks.
- 3). Make three equidistant markings along each line. Use a 1/16-inch drill bit to drill through the planks at every mark -- these holes will be where the screws hold the shelves to the sides of the bookcase. Use a countersink bit to remove shavings from each drilled hole, as well as allow for the shape of each screw head to be flush with (or below) the wood surface without fear of its splitting the wood.
- 4). Measure and cut the shelves to the desired lengths, removing all splinters with sandpaper. Stand the first shelf horizontally on the floor between the two sides of the bookcase -- position the shelf so that the screw holes in the bookcase sides will be lined up with the ends of the shelf. Install 2-inch wood screws through the three holes in each bookcase side and into the ends of the shelf. Repeat this process with each shelf. Sand off all pencil lines. Stain or paint the bookshelf to the desired color.
