Anxiety and Panic Attacks Result From Poor Breathing

Rarely do we sit and think about the most basic elements of life.
In reality, humans don't need much to stay alive other than food, water, and oxygen.
The body can survive for weeks without any nutrition from food.
Water, on the other hand, is more critical in that it is necessary for proper cell and organ functioning.
Dehydration can cause death in a matter of days.
How often though, do you think about the way you breathe and how essential that breath is? Breathing is such an automatic response that we rarely think much about it even though, without it, certain death will occur in a matter of minutes.
In fact, after only 6 minutes without oxygen, the brain begins to perish.
The human body requires constant oxygen replenishment to perform nearly every function necessary for life.
The brain uses approximately 20% of the oxygen we breathe to perform all of the complex tasks it is responsible for.
The heart is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body which provides the necessary elements for energy creation.
Every cell and chemical process is our body is impacted by the quality and quantity of the breath that we take.
Seeing how essential breathing is just to keep us alive, doesn't it make sense that improper or inefficient breathing, regardless of how small it may be, could greatly impact our well being and overall health? Sheldon Hendler, M.

stated, "Breathing is the first place - not the last place - one should investigate when any disordered condition presents itself.
Let's take a look at some of the physical and emotional symptoms that can occur as a result of poor breathing:
  • Heart palpitations
  • Chest pains
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling tired
  • Weakness in extremities
  • Feeling "spacey" or out of touch with reality
  • Lack of mental focus
  • Severe fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders
If you have ever suffered from panic attacks or generalized anxiety, you will recognize (and have experienced) many of these symptoms during the height of your anxiety.
In fact, most of the symptoms of a panic attack are contained in this list! Anxiety is most often cited as the number one trigger of hyperventilation, and oddly enough, hyperventilation produces many of the classic anxiety symptoms as noted in the list above.
It should be no surprise then that one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and panic is to learn proper breathing techniques - relaxed breathing that promotes the optimal oxygen/carbon dioxide balance in your body, thereby allowing it to work more efficiently.
The symptoms of anxiety will disappear almost immediately and over time, you will be able to retrain your body to use oxygen more efficiently thereby increasing your energy levels and overall sense of well-being.
