How to Install a Ceiling Fan on a Porch
- 1). Cut power to the existing porch ceiling fixture at the house fuse box. Position a ladder under the fixture. Remove the fixture with a screwdriver, taking out the mounting screws and disconnecting the wiring behind it. Let the wires from ceiling electrical box hang down.
- 2). Install the mounting bracket in your fan kit onto the ceiling electrical box, putting mounting screws through the bracket and into the mounting holes on the electrical box with a screwdriver. Pull the wires down through the open middle of the bracket.
- 3). Put the fan together and walk it up the ladder. Wire it by connecting the black wire from the fan to the black wire from the ceiling with a wire cap, then wrapping the connection in electrical tape. Do the same for the white wire from the fan and the white wire from the ceiling.
- 4). Twist the bare copper grounding wire from the ceiling around the green grounding screw inside the fan canopy (the part of the unit that connects to the bracket).
- 5). Raise the fan to the bracket, tucking the wiring up into the electrical box. Mount the fan onto the bracket, using the provided mounting screws and a screwdriver.
- 6). Turn on the power and test the fan. If everything works, run a thin bead of clear latex caulk around the seam where the fan canopy meets the ceiling.
