Out in the open we are surrounded by natural forces; the wind, rain and many influences.
They are often forces which are constant that operate in a certain way which is predictable.
The sun always faces south in Britain.
The north star is always in the north.
We can harness these signs in the natural habitat around us to indicate our direction.
To be able to this with confidence you need to have a keen eye, but it will surprise you how useful these skills can be to the happy camper or seasoned hiker.
Trees which stand on their own, or at the top of the highest woodland tress towering above the rest, are affected by the wind and sun.
Winds that blow from the south-west will push the branches and leaves towards the north-east.
The sun encourages greater growth on the southern side of the trees.
This can be shown by the horizontal branches which are found on the southern side and the more vertical branches on the northern side.
The sun can be a very accurate indicator of what is true north.
Without using any specialised equipment we can gain a good estimate which is good enough to go by if hiking or camping in a rural area.
Besides this is what our ancestors did hundreds and even thousands of years ago.
Place a stick in the ground and mark the end where there is a shadow with a stone.
Now allow enough time to pass for the shadow to move several inches.
Now mark the shadow with a second stone.
Now that the stones are lying on the west-east line and the shadow will move across from west to east.
It is imperative that when camping or hiking in the woods or in rural locations that you pack a compass.
You have to remember that the modern world we live in is very organised.
But the outdoor world is something far different.
A good navigator must be able to read landscapes, look for visible landmarks and differentiate the difference between a picture on a map as to how the terrain will look in the flesh.
You should always to the best of your ability be able to know your current location either by reference to the cardinal direction i.
e.
north, south, east and west; or to prominent geographical identifiers.
Do not be a navigator that never looks up, it is too easy to get engrossed in your surroundings if you are in the woods, by looking up you can at least gauge if you are going the right way.
