When choosing a kayak, you need to consider several things:

1. How do you plan to use it?

2. Do you want a single, tandem or sit on top model?

3. What features should the kayak have?

4. Would an inflatable kayak do the job?

5. Where are you going to store it?

6. How will you transport it?

Kayaks can be classified into three categories:
a. Recreational
b. Touring
c. Sea/Ocean kayaks

For recreation and most fishing purposes the recreational and touring types will do the job. They are suitable to use on lakes and rivers.

For recreational outings and fishing, you might want to consider an inflatable kayak. You can take an inflatable model anywhere you want to go and no roof rack is needed. Inflatable kayaks are durable and affordable. Price range is about $100-175 for one or two person sit on top models. They are lightweight, easy to carry and store.

Sit on top kayaks are good for beginners. Most people might be more comfortable when they are on top instead of inside the kayak. People with long legs should also be more comfortable using a sit on top model. Another benefit is that sit on tops have an open deck. There is no risk of being trapped in the boat if it tips over.

For recreation and fishing a wide kayak is more stable. Do you plan to paddle solo or with another person. It is more fun and safer to paddle with a partner. When fishing one person can paddle the other person can concentrate on fishing.

Generally, for a beginning or recreational paddler a shorter, wider kayak is a good choice. A sit on top model with a seat and paddle will cost about $500-1000.

An Austin sit on top fishing kayak costs about $650.
Pelican fishing kayaks cost about $450-700.
Coleman offers several recreational kayaks that are priced about $500-700.

There is a large selection of paddles available. You need to consider your size and paddling activity you will be doing. For most people paddles priced $25-60 will do the job.

Other accessories you might want to consider:

1. A backrest will make paddling more comfortable.

2. Bungee cords and goggles add safety and convenience.

3. A rudder that is foot controlled can aid in steering.

4. Always wear a personal floating device.
