How to Test the Ignition Coil on a 1996 Acura TL 2.5L

    • 1). Open the hood of the TL, and position yourself near the passenger side fender. Locate and inspect the ignition coil on the passenger side firewall of the TL. Remove the four-prong connector on the coil pack that connects the coil pack to the engine, by hand.

    • 2). Remove the electrical power connector from the other end of the coil pack, exposing both the positive and negative leads on the coil pack. Remove this connector by hand by simply pulling the connector free of the ignition coil.

    • 3). Attach the red lead from an ohmmeter to the positive electrical prong on the coil pack, or the prong marked with a +. Attach the black lead from the ohmmeter to the negative prong on the coil pack, or the prong marked with a -. Read the gauge or digital meter on the ohmmeter to determine the amount of resistance the coil pack is creating. The numbers on the gauge or meter should be between 0.36 and 0.44 ohms. If the number is not within this range, the coil pack is bad.

    • 4). Reinstall the electrical connector and engine connector in the same manner you took them off, if the coil pack is working properly.
