How to Make Felt Feathers
- 1). Fill a jelly roll tray halfway full of hot water and 1 tsp. of oil soap. Swish the mixture for 1 minute to combine them thoroughly.
- 2). Fill the bottom of the jelly roll tray with 2 oz. of colorful wool roving. Select any color roving that you prefer; these will become the felted feathers you will use for your project(s).
- 3). Tap the roving with your fingertips for 5 minutes, covering the entire area thoroughly. This will felt the top side of the roving together into a sheet. Turn the sheet over, then tap the other side for an additional 5 minutes.
- 4). Pull out the roving sheet, and rinse it well under warm water for 1 to 2 minutes to remove any remaining soap. Lay the felted wool sheet onto a towel to dry for 30 minutes.
- 5). Cut out an oblong oval from the felted wool sheet using scissors. Make the oval as wide and as long as you prefer. Fold the oval in half lengthwise.
- 6). Hold the oval in your hand so that it is standing up vertically. Snip into the feather along the right side, angling the scissors downward at a 45 degree angle. Snip every 1/8 inch. Repeat this process with the left side, angling the scissors in the opposite direction as before. This will transform the felt oval into a felt feather. Repeat to create as many felt feathers as you need.
