Making Wooden Fish Baits

    • 1). Draw out the lure pattern on paper and transfer it to the wood block, or draw directly onto the four sides of the wood block. You can create your own or use a pre-designed template.

    • 2). Use a scroll saw to cut along the line; use only one side of the wood block as your guide at first. You will have three individual pieces once the first cut is complete: the lure itself and the two excess end pieces.

    • 3). Tape the three pieces back together using duct tape or painter's tape. Flip the wood block over and perform a second cut using a different side of the wood block as your guide.

    • 4). Finish the smaller, more intricate cuts needed to get the lure's shape just right with a wood carving knife.

    • 5). Sand the edges of the wooden fish bait with 60-grit sandpaper. Gradually move up to higher-grit sandpapers until the wood feels smooth.

    • 6). Mark reference points on the front tip and underside of the lure for the line eye attachment and hook attachments; the number and placement of these vary depending on the wooden fish bait type. Drill holes into the references points on the lure with a small drill bit. You may also want to add a weight at this time. Use wood glue or waterproof putty to plug the hole and keep the weight from falling out.

    • 7). Apply a coat of clear sealant to the wooden lure. Apply one or two coats of white primer and one or two paint coats of any color. Add a clear coat of waterproof sealant once the paint is dry.

    • 8). Screw the closed eye hook line attachment into the hole at the front end. Also, screw the hook attachment pieces into the underside of the wooden fish bait. Secure the hooks to the hook attachments with split rings.
