    Removing the Alternator

    • 1). Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Disconnect the battery by unbolting the negative and positive terminal.

    • 2). Locate the tensioner pulley located on the front of the motor. Place an empty 3/8-inch socket wrench on the square notch at the top end of the pulley. Push the wrench down to loosen the belt.

    • 3). Remove the belt from the alternator. The alternator is on the top left of the motor.

    • 4). Disconnect the wiring harness in the back by pulling the release tab up and sliding the harness out. Unbolt the negative terminal by backing the nut off the stud with a deep well socket attached to the socket wrench. Slide the negative wire off the stud.

    • 5). Remove the three bolts holding the alternator to the bracket with a socket wrench. There is one bolt on each corner and one at the bottom.

    • 6). Slide the alternator off the mounting bracket. Place the alternator in a vise to take the pulley off.

    • 7). Lock the vise down and place a socket wrench with a socket attached to the middle of the pulley. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to take the nut off. The pulley will come off after the nut.

    Installing the Alternator

    • 1). Tighten the pulley onto the new alternator. Ensure the pulley is secure by tightening the nut with the alternator in a vise.

    • 2). Place the alternator in the mounting bracket. Start threading each bolt to secure the alternator in place.

    • 3). Tighten the three bolts with a socket wrench. Wiggle the alternator to ensure it is tight along the mounting bracket.

    • 4). Plug the wiring harness into the outlet in the back of the alternator. The harness will click into place.

    • 5). Bolt the negative terminal to the stud. Tighten the nut down with the deep well socket wrench.

    • 6). Place the empty socket onto the tensioner pulley and push the tensioner down. Place the belt back onto the alternator pulley. Pull the belt to ensure it is tight along the pulley.

    • 7). Connect the negative and positive terminals on the battery. Start the truck to ensure the alternator is charging correctly. Allow the truck to run for 15 minutes to charge the battery. Shut the truck down for at least an hour then start the truck to see if it held the charge while it was off.
