Make Your Own Mosquito Repellant
- 1). Rub crushed basil leaves on your exposed skin. The aroma discourages mosquitoes from landing. Eucalyptus, cloves, geranium, rosemary, citronella, feverfew, pennyroyal, celery extract, vanilla, peppermint and garlic also act as repellents. However, do not mix herbs. Rub only a single herb at a time on your skin.
- 2). Make an oil-based repellent with 10 drops of essential oil, made from one of the herbs in step 1, and two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a glass jar. Stir the ingredients and dab a few drops of the solution on your skin or clothes.
- 3). Mix an essential oil and vodka repellent spray. Combine half ounce of citronella oil, quarter ounce of lavender oil and one-eighth ounce each of pennyroyal, tea tree and jojoba oil in a spray bottle. Add 16 ounces of vodka to the mixture. Shake, then spray on your skin and clothing.
- 4). Cover exposed skin with mud. This is not an everyday solution, but if you're camping or out in the wilderness and have no other ingredients mud will keep away the mosquitoes.
