How to Refinish a Metal Bed Frame
- 1). Lay the metal bed frame out on a drop cloth. Use low tack painter's tape to tape off any parts of the bed that you don't wish to paint. Wipe the metal bed down with a damp cloth to remove any dust.
- 2). Brush away rust with a steel bristled brush. Use a swift back and forth motion to flake the rust off of the metal bed.
- 3). Sand the bed using medium grit sandpaper. Sanding will remove any remaining rust and will scuff up the coat of paint currently on the metal bed. Wipe the bed with a damp rag to remove any sanding dust.
- 4). Use a small brush to paint the corners, crevices and any detail scroll work on the bed. Use a thin coat of paint. Choose a paint formulated for metal surfaces.
- 5). Paint the larger portions of the bed using a larger paint brush. Paint from the top of the bed to the bottom using a thin coat of paint. Apply two to three coats of paint. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Allow the bed to dry overnight before attaching to a wall or bed.
