Quilting Machine Tips & Techniques
- Use a smaller thread for finer stitches. Use a heavier weight thread in a complementary color for stitching that stands out; always use a high-quality thread. Use the smallest needle possible without compromising stitch quality. Change needles often, approximately every four hours of sewing. While sewing, use a walking foot to keep the layers of the quilt from moving. The small opening of a straight-stitch throat plate provides extra support under the quilt, which enhances the look of the stitching on the back. When stitching lateral rows, instead of marking each line, utilize seam guides to manage spacing.
- When using a quilting machine, guide the quilt by using very light pressure, while gently sliding it through the machine. For greater flexibility while sewing, instead of rolling the quilt into a tube, fold it into an accordion pleat. To prevent snarls on the lining side of the quilt when taking the first stitch, bring the bobbin thread through to the quilt top and hold the thread and tails. Before moving the quilt for further stitching, stop with the needle position down into the quilt. To ensure a straight line of stitches after stopping, hold the quilt in place and stitch the previous stitch before proceeding.
