Using a Dehumidifier With an Air Conditioner

    Conditioner Or Dehumidifier

    • An air conditioner unit is much like a dehumidifier, though it's not as powerful as a dehumidifier. Air conditioner units, while they cool, pull moisture from the air, as a side effect, and expel the evaporated moisture out of the back of the unit. A dehumidifier will pull moisture from the air and store it within an internal drain pan and, while it might cool the air as a side effect, it doesn't cool the air to the extremes of an air conditioner.

    Conditioner And Dehumidifier

    • It's possible to use an air conditioner unit and a dehumidifier in the same room. Perhaps the room is large and you wish to cool it and remove excess moisture at the same time. You can turn on an air conditioner in or near a window and place a dehumidifier on the other side of the room. With both units in action, you can remove much moisture from the air and cool at least one segment of the room.

    The Dry Cycle

    • Some air conditioner units already feature a built-in dehumifying feature known as the "Dry" cycle. This feature runs independently of the "Cool" cycle of the air conditioner and is strictly geared toward dehumidifying the air. Press the "Dry" button on the air conditioner interface to start the cycle. The cycle lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the model of your air conditioner. Moisture from the air is pulled and evaporated out of the back of the unit. While the "Dry" cycle isn't meant to cool the air, the air can become somewhat cooler during the process.

    Drainage

    • Following a "Dry" cycle or a dehumidifying cycle, the accumulated moisture from the room might have filled the internal drain pan, which must be emptied before the unit is able to continue cooling or drying. Unplug the unit from the wall and carry it to a drainage area. Remove the drain pan cap and plunger and allow the unit to drain into the drainage area. Replace the cap and plunger, plug the unit back in and turn it back on to complete the "Dry" cycle.
