How to Use a Lead Core Fishing Line
- 1). Turn the lead core line several times near the end, breaking the lead inside. Pull this lead out, and you will be left with a small length of the nylon outer coating which you will tie to the "backing," the monofilament fishing line already in your reel.
- 2). Break the lead at the other end of the length of lead core line in the same manner. Again, pull the broken piece out and tie a leader to the empty nylon. The leader will carry your lure, and/or bait and hook.
- 3). Troll out your lead core fishing line/rig. Watch for the colors to change, remembering that each color represents 10 yards of line. For example, four colors equals 40 feet of lead core line behind your trolling boat.
- 4). Estimate the depth you have achieved with your lure/bait and hook on the leader. A very rough rule of thumb would put your lure/bait and hook 5 feet down for every color played out. For example, if you wanted to get down 40 feet to Walleye in Lake Erie, you would have to let out eight colors.
