How to Tie a Tarpon Leader
- 1
Tie your pound class leader into a double bimini. If you do not know how to tie a bimini twist, refer to the Resources section below. The first bimini loop should be 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The second loop should be between 18 and 24 inches. - 2
Split the biggest loop at the apex of the diameter. - 3
Twist the two running lines as many times as possible. This is important. The twist will give your line shock and give the lighter pound test leaders about 1 to 2 and ½ inches of shock, stretch, on the fish’s initial strike. - 4
Finish the twist with a Perfection or Surgeon's knot. The loop created here will go as a loop-to-loop connector with your fly-line or conventional running (the part that goes to your reel) line. - 5
Use the 4 to 6 inch Bimini loop to make an Albright knot on your 80 to 140 pound bite guard--tarpons’ mouths are very raspy and will wear through lighter mono or fluorocarbon lines. I typically take nine turns on my Albrights. Tighten down the knot and trim the excess tag end close to the cinch. - 6
Tie on a lure with your preferred terminal knot and hold on.
