How to Restring a Fishing Pole

    • 1). Remove and discard old fishing line. Run the new line through the rod guides and tie the line to the spool. Use a 2 to 3-turn uni-knot to attach the line to the spool.

    • 2). To tie a uni-knot, run 5 to 6-inches of line around the reel's spool. Make a loop by running the line back towards the spool. Grab both lines with the thumb and forefinger of your left hand and make 2 to 3 loops around the doubled line. Pull on the tag end and the standing line until the knot tightens. Trim the tag flush with the knot.

      Spinning reel

Spool the spinning reel by placing the spool of line on the floor. Ensure that the new line comes off the spool in a direction opposite of the way that the line goes on the spinning reel's spool. Clockwise rotation of the spinning reel spool means the new line must exit its spool in a counterclockwise direction.

    • 4). Flip the line spool over on it's other end if the line is exiting in the wrong direction. Keep tension on the line with your thumb and forefinger while the line is being spooled. Fill spool to within 1/8-inch of the spool's lip.

      Baitcasting reel

Spool the baitcasting reel first by running the pencil through the new line's spool. The pencil acts like an axle and the line will feed smoothly into the reel. Add tension while winding by squeezing the line with your thumb and forefinger. Quit adding line when the spool is filled to 1/8-inch from the spool's lip.

    • 6). Spool a closed face reel in a similar fashion to the spinning reel. Closed face reels do not hold much line, so monitor carefully so the spool is not overfilled. Screw the cap back after the spool is filled.
