    • Virgin coconut oil can be used to replace other oils and fats usually used in cooking.

    Health Benefits

    • Due to its high saturated fat content, it has been believed that virgin coconut oil is not healthy; however, scientists are beginning to find that it may be beneficial. According to Dr. Raymond Peat coconut oil can help with weight loss and hypothyroidism, and according to a study completed by Dr. Conrato S. Dayrit, it can help with HIV and AIDS. It has a number of antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

    Traditional Use

    • In addition to its place in tropical and Asian cuisines, coconut oil has often been used as a lamp oil.

    Skin Care

    • Coconut oil has been found to be an excellent moisturizer, and has been used as such. It's also been used to make soaps, massage oils, cosmetics and lubricants.

    Fuel

    • Coconut oil is finding its place as a biodiesel, and is commonly used in tropical countries, such as the Philippines, as an alternative fuel source.

    Warning

    • Though virgin coconut oil has been found to have health benefits, it is important to avoid using hydrogenated coconut oil, which is found in many nondairy creamers and candies.
