The grey-painted frontage of the Church Street Hotel hides a secret gem. Inside you'll find an incredible contrast with a brightly-colored Mexican-inspired wonderland. This boutique hotel in south London is a Spanish Americana oasis with interesting alcoves in the walls for kitsch religious artifacts. Even the front desk is an altar!

This hotel is quirky, for sure, but it also prides itself on the friendly service it can offer guests at excellent rates.

Single rooms start from £70 and double rooms from £120; you can make savings by choosing a room without an en-suite. There are only 30 rooms but there are some clever arrangements for groups or families where two singles and a double can share a floor so can gain the landing space too.

It is an old building so there is no elevator/lift to take you up but staff are always willing to help. There's a wildly-patterned stair carpet but it leads you to clean, quiet rooms with traditional cast iron beds designed specially for the hotel and made in the UK. The bathrooms are fantastic with imported Mexican tiles everywhere, mostly fitted by Jose, one of the owners.

Jose and his brother, Mel, want guests to enjoy a more homely feel so the Lounge has a large DVD library you can choose from and take to your room to watch on a flat-screen TV. The Lounge is also open 24 hours with an honesty bar which includes high-quality coffee (Monmouth) and a full array of spirits and beers. Breakfast is served in the Lounge and includes Neal's Yard Dairy products and the fresh bread comes from a local bakery.

Another major plus point is the free wifi throughout the building so you can use your laptop in your room or in the Lounge.

The 24 hour desk security has made this hotel popular with those enjoying London's diverse nightlife but it would also be an excellent choice for foodies as the 'Angels and Gypsies' restaurant on the ground floor of the building is a popular and well-respected restaurant/tapas bar.

The only downsides I could find were the wardrobes were a bit small and there's no tea and coffee in the rooms but, of course, you can help yourself in the Lounge.

Camberwell is not central London, and is not on the tube network, but it does have an excellent bus service with a bus stop almost outside the hotel. Victoria station, Trafalgar Square, and Parliament Square can all be reached in under 30 minutes and taking a bus really helps you connect a city.
