How to Tie the Yallerhammer
- 1). Place the fly in the vise and clamp the jaws on the hook bend. Start the thread at the eye of the fly by making several overlapping wraps. The overlap prevents the thread from pulling off the hook.
- 2). Wrap the thread to the hook bend with consecutive wraps. The wraps must cover the entire hook shank to make a smooth thread base.
- 3). Select a webbed, yellow hackle feather with fibers slightly longer than the length of the hook shank. Strip one side of the feather by pulling the fibers away from the stem. Pull the very tip fibers away from the stem to expose a short section of stem.
- 4). Hold the exposed section of stem on the hook bend. Make five tight turns of thread to secure the stem to the hook. Wrap the thread down the hook shank and stop at the eye of the hook.
- 5). Wrap the hackle in consecutive turns until you reach the eye of the hook. Use your fingers to maintain an outward-facing position on the fibers with each wrap. Stroking the fibers as you make the wrap prevents them from folding under the stem. Make five tight turns of thread to secure the hackle at the eye of the hook. Cut the remaining hackle flush to the hook shank.
- 6). Half-hitch the thread at the eye of the hook with a whip finishing tool. Cut the thread flush to the hook to complete the fly.
