    Witch Hazel

    • Use a cotton ball coated with witch hazel as needed to provide relief from itching and swelling of swollen hemorrhoidal tissue and veins. Liberally apply the witch hazel with the cotton ball to cleanse bleeding hemorrhoids and soothe the veins and skin. Allow the witch hazel to dry before pulling the underwear up. Witch hazel can also be used on dried toilet tissue, which has been folded into layers of thickness as opposed to using medicated wipes for relief after each bowel movement.

    Soft Toilet Tissue

    • Use soft toilet tissue if you can't use medicated wipes after each bowel movement. Use gentle motions when wiping after a bowel movement to avoid further irritation to bleeding hemorrhoids. You may want to coat the dry tissue with gentle skin lotion or baby oil to soothe the swollen hemorrhoidal tissue of the anal and rectal area. You may want to use a few layers of tissue compressed into the underwear to prevent blood from soiling your underwear during an episode of hemorrhoids.

    Medicated Wipes

    • Use over-the-counter medicated wipes after each bowel movement. Using medicated wipes will reduce the itching and swelling, which is often a bothersome side effect of hemorrhoids. Use the medicated wipes before using a hemorrhoidal suppository as a method for providing lubrication when inserting hemorrhoidal suppositories into the rectum. Keep the box of wipes tightly closed to prevent them from drying as dried wipes can further irritate sensitive hemorrhoidal tissue and swollen veins in the rectum.

    Sitz Bath

    • Run a bathtub with lukewarm water. Pour half cup of Epsom salt into the water. Sit in the water with your feet drawn up touching your butt. Sit for 15 minutes in the saltwater solution. Saltwater has enormous properties of swelling reduction. Allow the anal region to air dry for five to 10 minutes before getting dressed.

    Padded Seats

    • Use thicker padding on seats, such as at the computer, in the car, on the toilet and on the couch when sitting. Sitting for extended periods of time puts extra pressure on swollen hemorrhoidal tissue and veins in the rectum. Use correct sitting posture, which is sitting straight up, to avoid putting excess pressure on the anal and rectal region. Walk around every 15 minutes to relieve pressure on the anal and rectal regions.

    Hemorrhoidal Suppositories

    • Use hemorrhoidal suppositories after thoroughly wiping following a bowel movement. Insert the suppository into the rectum. The hemorrhoidal suppository will melt and deliver medication, which will relieve the itching and swelling of the veins and hemorrhoidal tisue. Avoid passing gas for at least 15 minutes following the insertion of a hemorrhoidal suppository because this can cause leakage of the solution, which can compromise the effectiveness of the suppository. Clench the anal opening to ensure the suppository doesn't slip from the rectum after insertion.

    Stool Softeners

    • Use a stool softener, which includes a mild laxative ingredient, such as Colace, in addition to adding extra fiber and water consumption to the diet. Keeping stools soft will help to prevent constipation and reduce the need to strain to have a bowel movement. Avoiding straining during the passing of a bowel movement, which not only can help to prevent hemorrhoids, but also will help to avoid putting pressure on existing swollen veins and hemorrhoidal tissue.
