How to Match Subs to Amps
- 1). Select a sub woofer for your car and note the watt value assigned to it. This is the wattage it can handle. Note the RMS rating and not the peak power rating. Peak power is only good for short bursts, while RMS is the more continuous measurement of what the sub can actually hold.
- 2). Find an amp that has an RMS rating equal to your sub woofer. Do not be fooled by large advertised wattage numbers. These may be "total watts," which refers to a combined number of the wattage output of all channels and/or based on peak power rather than RMS.
- 3). Check to make sure that the amp has the outputs and channels necessary to run your subs. If you chose to run two woofers instead of one, you will need to able to hook them both up.
