How to Fit a New Dishwasher Under a Counter

  • 1). Measure the length, width and depth of the space in the kitchen that is available to put in the dishwasher. If the space is precut, the space is likely to be slightly more than 24 inches wide -- the standard width of a dishwasher -- and slightly more than 35 inches high -- the standard height for a dishwasher. The standard depth of a dishwasher is 24 inches.

  • 2). Select a dishwasher that fits the space if you haven't already purchased one. When shopping for the dishwasher, be aware of slight variations in sizes, which can run slightly narrower, higher or more shallow than the standard dishwasher. Also check the dishwasher for adjustable feet, which may be included with the dishwasher and have the ability to alter the dishwasher's height by 2 or 3 inches.

  • 3). Place the dishwasher in front of the opening under the counter and tilt the dishwasher up slightly on each edge at a time to put felt pads beneath the feet or the bottom edges to prevent scuffs on the floor. Slide the dishwasher back into the space under the counter to make sure that you have a proper fit.

  • 4). Pull the dishwasher out of the space if it fits. Connect the piping of the dishwasher to the water supply according to the directions included with the appliance and return the dishwasher to the space beneath the counter when finished.
