The Removal of Vinyl Tile From Wood Floors
- 1). Cut across the middle of a floor tile with your utility knife, cutting as deeply as you can through the vinyl.
- 2). Set the edge of your floor scraper into the cut line you just made. Push it forward repeatedly from different angles, taking up the tile. Hold the scraper at a shallow enough angle that you don't gouge the wood floor under the vinyl, as this could cause distortions in the surface that will affect the new top flooring.
- 3). Scrape up the next tile by setting the edge of the scraper against the exposed edge of the tile, from inside the space created by the removal of the first tile.
- 4). Repeat and continue, scraping up each tile next to the exposed area, working your way out in all directions and making sure not to gouge the wood underneath. Stop and discard the tiles as necessary when they start piling up. Take them all out and remove them from the room.
- 5). Go over the wood surface with your razor scraper, taking up any residual material from the tiles. Sweep thoroughly with a broom.
- 6). Mop up the surface with household floor cleaner. Let it dry. The floor is now ready for retiling.
