How to Decorate the Top of Cabinets

    • 1). Use the tops of your kitchen cabinets to show off a treasure trove of collectible art. Stop hiding your beloved cookie jar or pitcher collection inside kitchen cabinets. Arrange them across the top. You'll not only free up space for stuff you want to hide, but your collection will give you pleasure every time you look up -- particularly if sweet memories are associated with each piece.

    • 2). Paint the wall area over your kitchen cabinets a dramatic color and then arrange a gathering of decorative accessories in contrasting colors atop the cabinets. Add the Mediterranean flavor you long for by arranging empty Chianti bottles on cabinet tops and then pile on clusters of greenery and faux grapes that spill over the sides of the cabinets. Add silk garlic strings to prove that you don't have to spend a fortune to change the mood of a room.

    • 3). Reserve the area over your kitchen cabinet tops as a staging area for holiday décor. Place holiday houses along the cabinet tops, and if they light up, you'll create a wonderland of Christmas cheer. Turn off kitchen lights and rely upon the glow of your village to warm the room at night. Replace the village with dollar store bunnies at Easter or pumpkins, corn husks and small hay bundles in the fall.

    • 4). Think beyond your kitchen. If bedrooms, a home office or den has been retrofitted with cabinets or your tall armoires beg for decorator touches, solve multiple problems by sprucing them up while achieving practical goals. Confine your child's overabundance of toys to the top of cabinets or use the empty space to arrange color-coordinated boxes that contain their out-of-season clothing.

    • 5). Add a folksy flourish to over-the-cabinet space by displaying baskets and/or pottery to add character and personality to the lofty space. Sick of overflowing bookshelves with piles of novels and texts you've read but can't bear to give away? Turn your cabinet tops into a library that contains and displays the reading matter. Add silk ivy to the arrangement to add a charming Old World touch and you've solved multiple problems.
