General Electric Ice Maker Troubleshooting

    Not Enough Ice

    • 1). Check that the lever inside the ice maker is in a down position and that it is not blocked by anything that could keep it from being in the down position.

    • 2). Check that the water pressure is adequate. To check the water pressure, dispense water into a cup or pitcher for 20 seconds. If the cup contains less than 13.5 ounces after 20 seconds, the ice maker does not have adequate water pressure to work correctly.

    • 3). Check inside the ice maker to see if the ice cubes are clumping. Clumping ice cubes makes it more difficult for the dispenser to work properly. Periodically manually remove clumped ice.

    Ice Overflows in the Freezer

    • 1). Check to make sure the ice bucket is directly underneath the outlet where the ice falls. An ice bucket that is not centered may not catch all the ice that falls, thus allowing ice to fall into other parts of the freezer.

    • 2). Check to see if the lever in the ice maker is not stuck in a down position. If freezing occurs around the joint of the lever, this can cause the lever to freeze. If the lever does not move upward when the ice bucket begins to fill up, the ice maker will continue to make ice.

    • 3). Make sure there are no food items placed directly below the outlet where ice cubes fall. Even a corner of a box or other item under the outlet could cause ice to fall somewhere other than the ice bucket.

    Taste & Smell

    • 1). Check your refrigerator and freezer to see if there are any containers that are open or not covered. Uncovered containers can cause the ice to taste or smell bad.

    • 2). Dispense of all the ice in the ice maker and make fresh ice. Ice that has been in the ice bucket for too long can become stale and may absorb food odors.

    • 3). Check the filter in the ice machine. General Electric recommends that users change filters every six months.
