How to Connect Wires for a Phone Jack Installation
- 1). Snip the ends of the telephone wires cleanly with wire strippers. Strip off ¼ inch of insulation from the end of each wire.
- 2). Trace the wires that lead from the pins on the telephone jack socket to the terminals. The pins are numbered one through six, going from left to right as you look at the rear of the faceplate. Terminal 1 is the terminal that connects to pin 1, terminal 2 connects to pin 2 and so on.
- 3). Remove the screw for terminal 1 with a screwdriver and wrap the bare end of the white wire around the screw. Tighten the screw into terminal 1 to hold the white wire in place.
- 4). Repeat Step 3 to connect the black wire to terminal 2, the red wire to terminal 3, the green wire to terminal 4, the yellow wire to terminal 5 and the blue wire to terminal 6.
- 5). Position the telephone jack so that the holes for the screws that attach the faceplate to the wall line up with the corresponding holes in the wall. Insert the long terminal screws into the holes and fasten them with a screwdriver. Insert the plug for your telephone into the phone-jack socket.
