How to Use an AGM Battery in a Chevy Van
- 1). Check the availability and use of AGM batteries for your year and model of Chevy Van. For example, a 1994 to 1996 V8 7.4L Chevy G Series van accepts the Optima 8004 AGM battery. Consult a size and acceptance chart for your year and model Chevy van for the appropriate sized AGM battery (see Resources).
- 2). Open the Chevy van engine compartment. Some Chevy vans have the battery compartments under the front hood, while others have it in the rear wheel well region of the van. Consult an owner's manual for your year and model.
- 3). Remove the red and black cables from the old battery terminals Use an adjustable wrench if necessary. Inspect the cable terminals for corrosion. If present, pour some cola into a cup or bowl, dip a toothbrush into the cola and scrub off the corrosion from the cables. Cola has an acid that removes battery acid corrosion. Wipe the cables down with the rag after cleaning.
- 4). Remove the old battery. If there is a security bar on the top of the battery, unscrew the lock nuts and remove (you may need a screwdriver to remove the lock nuts if they are not wing style nuts).
- 5). Place the AGM battery into the battery housing and attach the red cable to the red terminal and the black to the black terminal. Tighten them on the terminals with the adjustable wrench. Close the battery compartment or hood.
- 6). Turn the ignition on and test the battery and starter.
