How to Field Dress a Deer in Ohio
- 1). Roll the deer onto its back and cut an area near the breastbone. Make the cut large enough to insert your fingers. Lift the skin and cut down the deer from breast to 3 inches beyond the naval. Be careful not to cut internal organs.
- 2). Roll the deer onto its side. Carefully rake out the internal organs without puncturing them. Use a knife to cut the organs from the inside of the carcass. Cut the diaphragm and cut out the lungs. Remove the lungs. Cutting through the esophagus and windpipe allows a full bleed of the deer.
- 3). Tie a string around the bladder and intestines remaining in the deer cavity. Cut a shallow area near the anus, and insert a finger into the cut. Lift the intestine, and cut the intestine and bladder from the connective tissue holding it in the cavity. Gently remove from the body cavity. Take the deer to a barn -- or the location where you are staying -- to finish field dressing.
- 4). Hang the deer by its hind legs to begin skinning. Skin the deer by making a cut from the front legs to the breast bone. Pull free from the carcass with the use of your hands and hunting knife. Remove the front and back legs with a small saw by cutting at the joints.
