Glass Grinding Tutorial

    • 1). Mark the glass along the line you intend to grind with a marker or paint pen. If you are just smoothing the edges, a mark usually isn't necessary.

    • 2). Check the grinder water supply. Clean out the reservoir if necessary and fill it with fresh water. Make sure the grinding bit is in good shape, installed properly and clear of debris. If your grinder has a flat disk, clean that up as well.

    • 3). Put on your safety glasses. Turn on the grinder and wait until water reaches the bit or disk before you begin grinding.

    • 4). Select the piece of glass you want to grind. Grind straight cuts using the disk if your grinder has one. Using both hands, grasp the glass between your thumbs and forefingers. Hold the glass edge firmly against the spinning disk, but don't press too hard. Let the machine do the work. Move quickly around the edges of the piece to smooth out irregularities. Be careful not to round off the corners too much. Tilt the glass slightly toward you and grind the piece again to bevel the edge for safer handling. Flip the piece around and bevel the other edge.

    • 5). Grind a curved or straight piece of glass using the round bit by holding the piece flat on the surface of the grinder table with your fingertips and pressing it against the rotating bit. Move the piece at a fairly rapid rate to avoid gouging the glass. This is especially true when grinding straight cuts. Bevel the edges of the piece by tilting the glass up slightly as you run it past the bit. Turn the piece over and bevel the other edge.

    • 6). Turn the machine off and wipe the pieces of glass on a towel when you're done grinding. Check the pieces against your pattern to be sure they fit.
