How to Fix a Circuit Breaker Panel

    • 1). Turn off the main power switch to your home. You'll find this switch located by the electric meter in or on your home. This is an essential step -- you should never attempt to work on your circuit breaker panel when the power is on.

    • 2). Remove the outer panel of the circuit breaker box. This will be held on with two or four bolts or screws, located at the top and bottom of the panel, or at the four corners of the box.

    • 3). Pull firmly on the defective circuit breaker to slide it out of its socket. No special tools are required, just a firm pull on the breaker's handle.

    • 4). Buy a replacement circuit breaker of the same model and amperage at an electrical supply or home improvement store. Take the old one with you to ensure you match the brand and style correctly. Do not replace your circuit breaker with one of a higher amperage -- this could overload the wiring in your home.

    • 5). Push the new circuit breaker into the gap left by the old one. Replace the panel, and attach it with the screws or bolts.
