How to Wire a Data Cable
- 1). Cut the cable to the desired length. It is a good idea to leave a few extra inches at both ends in case the process has to be repeated in the event of an error.
- 2). Cut and remove the protective jacket about 1.5 inches from the end of the cable.
- 3). Untwist the copper wire pairs and make them as flat as possible.
- 4). Arrange the wires in one of the following coloring orders based on the type of cable being wired:
For a patch cable: white orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, brown.
For a crossover cable, arrange one end of the cable the same as for a patch cable. The wiring order for the other side must be: white green, green, white orange, blue, white blue, orange, white brown, brown. - 5). Hold the arranged copper wires flat and cut them to the same length using the wire cutter.
- 6). Insert the wires in to the RJ-45 connector until the ends of the wires reach the end of the plug.
- 7). Insert the RJ-45 plug into the crimping tool and press down hard to ensure proper contact between the copper wires and the plug.
- 8). Repeat steps 2-7 for the other end of the cable.
