How to Make Rooster Decorative Plates
- 1). Select an all-cotton fabric with a rooster motif. There are a variety of fabric patterns with roosters at most fabric stores or craft outlets. If you want just one rooster in the center of your plate, keep in mind the diameter of your plate when searching for fabric.
- 2). Wash, dry and iron the fabric. Make sure there are no loose or hanging threads on the fabric.
- 3). Cut the fabric in a circular shape with a diameter 2 to 3 inches longer than the plate. Keep in mind that plates are not completely flat. You want more than enough fabric to drape over the back of the plate.
- 1). Wash and dry the clear glass plate thoroughly. Remove any price stickers and leftover glue. The plate also should be free of any marks or glue.
- 2). Place the plate face down onto your work surface. Coat the bottom with Mod Podge glue using your foam paintbrush.
- 3). Carefully place the right side of the fabric down onto the plate. Starting in the center of the plate, gently smooth the fabric with your hands eliminating any creases or globs of glue. If there is an area needing an extra bit of glue, add a little Mod Podge with your fingers. Allow the plate to dry for one hour.
- 4). Apply another coat of Mod Podge to the back of the plate, which now has your rooster fabric glued to it. Let the plate dry overnight.
- 5). Lightly sandpaper the back of the plate until it is completely smooth. Be careful not too rub to hard, or you'll tear the rooster fabric. Carefully cut the excess fabric from around your decorative plate.
- 6). Apply water-based gloss varnish to the fabric-side of the plate. Wait three hours, and apply a second coat of gloss varnish. Leave the plate to dry overnight.
- 7). Carefully wash the front of the glass plate to remove dust or debris. Do not wash the back of the plate. Your decorative rooster plate is now ready to show.
