Tips on Camping Near Bears
- 1). Keep all non-perishible items in your tent. This excludes toothpaste, mints, and even lozenges as they have been known to attract bears so you don't want them in your tent. If you've been cooking you might change your clothes and leave the clothes you wore while cooking outside of the tent. This is because food aroma can stick to your clothes thus attracting bears.
- 2). Keep the cooking area at a distance from your tent. Position it at least 50 yards away. If possible, test which way the wind is blowing when you set it up so the food aroma doesn't travel toward your tent.

Store food properly. If you don't bring your own storage, some campgrounds actually offer something for you to store your food in. Either way, it's best to store the food in a cooler and keep it in the vehicle. Lock the cooler in the trunk of the car or covered and locked truck bed. You can also buy containers designated for camping around bears. These can range anywhere from $25 to $75. - 4). Be cautious. Bears may not always appear once you're tucked away in your tent sleeping. They could walk up at any time, especially if they smell food. Keep an eye out, and always be cautious of your surroundings.
