    Apple iWork: Numbers

    • Your Macbook shipped with a 30-day free trial of iWork, Apple's collection of word processor, presentation and spreadsheet software. The Numbers application allows you to create Excel-compatible spreadsheets, create various charts and graphs, work with formulas and export your spreadsheets to PDF. After your 30-day trail, iWorks is available to purchase directly from Apple's website, Apple's retail stores or other Apple retailers such as Best Buy.

    Open Office

    • If you are looking for a free software to read and edit Excel documents, download Oracle's Open Office software. This package includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw and Base software applications. The Calc application allows you to create Excel-compatible spreadsheets. Software features include the ability to style and format data, work with formulas and supports advanced DataPivot technology.

    Google Docs

    • If you have a Google account, you can upload the Excel file to the Google Docs section of your account and read, edit and print your file online. Log in to your Google or Gmail account. Select "Documents" under the "More" drop-down menu to enter the Google Docs section then upload your file and you can manipulate the data.

    Quick Look

    • If you really only need to give the Excel file a quick read and you do not need to edit any of the data, you can use the built-in Quick Look feature in Mac OSX. Locate the file that you have saved on your computer. Control-click on the file name and select "Quick Look" from the menu. You will then be shown a preview of the document on your screen. This option works best for one page spreadsheets as you do not have the ability to navigate to different pages or tabs.
