River Fishing in Kayaks

    Kayaks

    • A short kayak, 11 feet or smaller, is common for river fishing. Sit-on-top kayaks are preferred for stability without sacrificing mobility. Drab colors keep you hidden from fish as well as motor boats that may spook your fish.

    Gear

    • Kayak river fishing gear essentials include a paddle, personal flotation device, paddle float, rod holders, anchor and light. Your style of fishing can determine other gear such as a tackle box, stripping basket, bait tank or net.

    Weather

    • Rivers may be smaller water, but they are still subject to weather conditions. Always check conditions before getting on the water and dress appropriately for weather and water temperatures.

    Water

    • Kayaks allow fishing toward shore or the center of the river. Study river topography to find flats and deep-water channels where fish may travel and surface. Look for shallower, warm water. Remember shallow water is not always warm water depending on the deeper water that feeds the pool.

    Safety

    • Find out if the water you are fishing is tidal and know where you are in relation to high tide and low tide so you do not become stranded on a dry river. Check water releases if you are fishing rivers with dams to avoid sudden elevation and current increases, and make sure you are strong enough to paddle back to your launch or your pick-up location.
