How to Replace a Timing Belt in a Toyota
- 1). Disconnect the upper radiator hose by loosing the screws on the hose clamp and then pulling off the hose. Remove it from the engine bay.
- 2). Remove the drive belt on the A/C compressor. To do this, simply loosen the bolts on the compressor until there is slack in the drive belt, and then pull off the belt.
- 3). Remove the drive belt on the alternator by loosening the bolts on the alternator itself then moving it to put slack in the drive belt. Once you have done this simply pry off the drive belt with your hands.
- 4). Unscrew the plastic timing belt cover and remove it.
- 5). Unbolt the bracket behind the A/C compressor and remove it.
- 6). Unbolt the bracket behind the alternator and remove it.
- 7). Use a tensioner to loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner. This will put some slack in the timing belt.
- 8). Pry the timing belt off of the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.
- 9). Turn the camshaft pulley until the mark on the pulley lines up with the notch on the back plate.

Turn the crankshaft pulley until the mark on the pulley lines up with the notch on the back plate. - 11
Place the new timing belt over the crankshaft pulley, the camshaft pulley and the timing belt tensioner, taking special care not to move the any of the gears while putting on the timing belt. - 12
Tighten the bolt on the timing belt tensioner until the proper amount of tension is restored to the belt (consult your owner's manual). - 13
Bolt the A/C compressor bracket and the alternator bracket back into place. - 14
Screw the plastic timing belt cover into place. - 15
Place the drive belts back over the A/C compressor and the alternator. - 16
Tighten the bolts on the A/C compressor and the alternator to secure them into place. - 17
Put tension in the belts by tightening the tensioner bolts. - 18
