Home Remedy for Stuffed Nose & Sore Throat
- Sore throats and stuffy noses can benefit from hot showers, a humidifier or hot beverages and soups. The steam helps loosen and dilute mucus in the nose and moisturizes the nasal passages. Hot liquids, such as chicken soup with cayenne pepper and onion, or tea with honey and lemon, can loosen congestion and help soothe a sore throat. Get plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Avoid milk, as it can cause inflammation and thickening of the mucus.
- Gargling with a solution of 1 tsp. salt and 1 cup warm water every hour will help soothe a sore throat, especially when it's accompanied by sinus drip. The salt water draws out excess liquid and reduces swelling, while dehydrating and washing away bacteria. Continue this process until relief is extended and the sore throat is gone.
- Take a walk or place several pillows under your head at night; standing upright or keeping your head elevated can help relieve congestion. Lying down can cause mucus to settle in your sinuses, causing increased discomfort and congestion. Get some exercise and keep your head elevated to allow the mucus to drain.
- Zinc and vitamin C have long been known to boost the immune system and shorten healing time for a cold. Take supplements or eat foods containing high levels of vitamin C for the most benefit. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit and watermelon have high concentrations of vitamin C, and they're hydrating, too.
