How Does an Inverter Work in a Laptop?

Introduction

Inverters are electric circuit boards that convert direct current---DC---into alternating current---AC. They are usually placed behind the LCD display in a laptop. This circuit energizes the lighting system on a laptop screen. There are 3 components in a laptop screen: the LCD screen, the light bulb and the inverter. The inverter provides the light bulb with power that lights up and enhances colors on the LCD screen. The other function of the inverter is to store electric current to make the laptop portable. The inverter utilizes electric power stored in the battery and allows the user to use the laptop even when it is not connected to an electric socket or direct power source.

The Method

The inverter converts direct electric current into alternating current. The direct current in the case of a laptop is the current stored and supplied by a battery into oscillating power or alternating current. This is done by an oscillator placed in an electric circuit. The oscillator drives a transistor to create a square wave. This square electric wave is put through a transformer to produce the output that lights up the bulb to enhance images and colors on the laptop screen.

Function

The inverter in a laptop is a static inverter. It is not a moving inverter and does not have moving parts. The LCD display of a laptop depends on the efficiency of the inverter. The inverter gives the power output for the end user to make adjustments and modify colors on the display. It converts the power from a battery, and this helps make the laptop a portable device. Without an inverter, the laptop would be large and impossible to carry. The inverter ensures that the end user has better visibility on the screen and that the energy consumption is low.

Advantages

Recharging a battery is easy on a laptop, and a fully charged battery lasts longer because of the inverter. The battery can be charged with DC power when the end user is on the move. Laptops can be recharged in cars and on airplanes. The inverter converts the 12-volt DC battery power into 115-volt AC power and can be easily charged by plugging into the power source of a car or airplane. The inverter has a shutdown timer that protects the laptop from low-voltage or high-voltage electricity damage and damage caused by changes in temperature. The ground-fault protection offered by an inverter protects the laptop from damp and wet conditions.

True Sine Wave

Laptop inverters are expensive because they are "true sine wave," or "pure sine wave," inverters. These inverters provide a consistent power supply, and the output is good for nearly two hours of use.

Importance

The laptop inverter is the most important part of a laptop. The LCD display needs an inverter to enhance visibility. Images and pictures are placed on the screen by the action of the inverter. It has the capacity to supply electric power to a screen of any size. Thinner laptops with bigger screens are available because of this flexible capacity of the inverter.
