    Cod Fish

    • The cod is one of Britain’s most popular fish. Many enjoy eating cod, as it’s often filleted and battered to perfection. Cod fish are easiest to catch during the winter season, as they enjoy the cold water. Therefore, during summer months they often move towards the deep end of the sea. Cod is a greenish-brown colored fish with an extremely large mouth. These fish can grow to be as large as 44 pounds as they love to eat and are known to be greedy with their food.

    Locations

    • Cod fish fill the waters of the beaches around the coast, especially the British Isles. During the winter season, it’s best to fish the southern coastal waters, however, they can be caught throughout the year in the northern waters. Cod can be found throughout the British Isle’s shoreline. They are far more plentiful throughout the South Scotland shores.

    World Record

    • Whitby is known as the cod capital of the UK. In 1992, a record cod fish of 58 pounds and 7 ounces was caught there. The fish was caught from Stu Johnson’s boat Sea Trek. Both boat and shore fishing are popular in Whitby.

    Novice Fishermen

    • For those first-time cod fishermen, it’s best to go boat fishing. Special packages are offered through resorts and harbors. Both tackle and bait are often included. Such an excursion can be the best way to get the full experience of cod fishing in the sea for the first time. There will be skippers there to offer advice and help walk the fishermen through each step.

    Bait

    • Both lugworm and ragworm are popular bait used for cod fishing. However, peeler crab is often recommended as the best kind of bait for catching cod. Bait can be purchased at tackle shops or dug up as fresh bait. However, it’s important to dig carefully, watching out for king ragworms, which look like huge centipedes and can grow as long as 60 centimeters. Their bites can be extremely painful, as they have retractable pincers inside their mouths.
