How to Clear the OBD on a 1996 Saturn SL1
- 1). Open the hood of your Saturn. With either a socket or a wrench, loosen and remove the small bolt that connects the battery cable to the battery's negative terminal, which is marked with a minus sign (the plus sign is the positive terminal). Move the battery cable aside to prevent accidental contact with the battery terminal.
- 2). Turn on the car radio and lights to discharge any electrical charges remaining in the car. This will reset the check engine light and erase the data in the OBD. As the electrical charges are being discharged, you'll also lose any user-specific settings in the car such as the time and your favorite radio stations.
- 3). Reconnect the battery cable to the battery and start the car to verify the check engine light is off. When the car starts, the idle may be a little rough because the idle setting has been erased from the car's onboard computer. Drive the car for a few miles at highway speeds and it'll correct itself.
