How to Determine Fishing Bobber Line Length

    • 1). To find the correct line length, create a rig that allows the depth that the bait will be presented to be adjusted. To start making the rig release eight feet of the main line from the top tippet of the rod. Tie a bobber stop knot close to the tippet. To tie the knot use the section of heavier line, wrapping it three or four times around the main line. Bring the ends over each other another four or five times. Tighten the ends and shape the knot. Snip the loose ends.

    • 2). Slide the stop bead up to the bobber stop knot, followed by the bobber. Attach the leader several inches below the bobber by making a loop, threading it through the swivel on the leader, then passing the end of leader through the loop and tightening the loop.

    • 3). Select a sinker; the weight is important. It must not be so heavy it overpowers the floatation of the bobber, but it needs to be heavy enough to hold the bait in the water column. Two to four ounces is generally adequate. Tie the sinker to the bitter end of the main line using a simple overhand knot.

    • 4). Adjust the depth that the bait is being presented by moving the bobber stopper knot up and down on the main line. Fish a depth for 10 to 15 minutes. If no strikes occur, adjust the depth. Continue until the feeding depth and water conditions are found.
